Valladolid

San Bernardino de Sisal in Valladolid is one of the few remaining exconventos in the Yucatán.  A sprawling Franciscan complex, it has its own cenote and covered noria water wheel to draw up water for the convento–a feature needed in the Yucatán, where there is no surface water.

Notable Features: Exconvento de Yucatán; San Bernardino de Sisal; Franciscan architecture; Barrel vault ribbed at sanctuary; Espadaña rather than a bell tower; Vigas at portería ceiling; Merlons on church; Cenote as water source; Noria water wheel
